The 1858/1888 Walker organ in Romsey Abbey is a rare survivor from one of the finest eras in British organ building.
Over the years of its history, many proposals for its improvement and enlargement were put forward
by a variety of builders but a lack of money prevented any of these schemes from coming into fruition.
After many years of "make do and mend", a full overhaul was embarked upon in 1996 by Walker Organs.
The actions were unified, with the Swell (situated high in the triforium) being returned to tracker action;
this had been made pneumatic in 1888 by Walker when the organ was moved to its present position. At this time the
stop action was electrified (being partially pneumatic before) and a modern capture system installed.
More information on the history of the organ (including a specification) can be found
on the Abbey Choir website.
